Of Memories and Stars.

Julian Philipp Sword meets a woman who strikingly looks like someone from his past.

Thankfully it was the weekend. What a great way to bond with the family than bringing the whole family to Sulani for a trip. Julian Philipp Sword, a father of five, planned just that after being promoted at his job as a senior software engineer at SpaceY.

While her siblings and their father were dining in another table, Sofia Kerstin was talking to her boyfriend on the phone when a woman captured her interest.

“I’ll call you later. Bye!” said Kerstin hurriedly into the phone as she hung up. She followed the familiar-looking woman curiously with her eyes.

The woman had long blonde hair, a fair complexion, and a friendly, cheerful face. She sauntered right in front of Sofia Kerstin, who was looking at her intently. Moments later, it occurred to Sofia that she has to get her father’s attention. She faced the direction of the table where the rest of the family sat and waved at her Dad.

“Dad,” Sofia called, her tone urgent. “Come over here, quickly.”

Julian heard his daughter and replied, “Just a sec, dear.”

He then excused himself from his other children to go to Sofia’s table. Julian gave his daughter a quizzical look as he asked, “What is it, Sofia? Did you and your boyfriend argue?”

“No, Dad, look…” answered Sofia as she prompted her father to look at where the woman is. “Look at her.”

Suddenly, Julian’s heart raced. A gust of imaginary wind blew on his face as the woman appeared before him. She was smiling at him like she knew him from before, or so Julian thought.

“She looks like Mom,” whispered Sofia, her voice almost cracking in surprise. She then looked at her father who stood up from his seat.

His daughter was right. The woman reminded him of his late wife Jamie Katz-Sword. All of a sudden, Julian missed her.

“Dad?” Sofia piped up, sounding a little panicky. “Don’t tell me you’re going to approach her?”

Julian responded with a brief nod. Sofia then knew that their father can handle this, so she watched him go towards the stranger.

Julian cleared his throat and extended his hand for the other person to shake. “Hi, my name is Julian Philipp Sword,” he began, clearing his throat. “I would like to apologise to you on behalf of my daughter Sofia. You may have noticed that we were looking at you —”

The blonde-haired woman smiled. “Oh, oh, oh! You don’t have to worry about a thing, Mr Sword,” the woman cried, trying to assuage Julian’s embarrassment. “By the way, my name is Athena Werner.”

“Just call me Julian,” he suggested, helpfully. “Do you come here often? My family loves this place and I decided to bring my kids here because I got promoted.”

“Congratulations on your promotion, Julian!” exclaimed Athena. “Yes, I come here often. Well, I live nearby and the owner of this place is a friend of mine.”

“Oh, that’s wonderful,” he smiled. “So you’re an island girl, then?”

Athena chuckled at the comment Julian gave. “Exactly!”

Sofia then stood next to Julian and apologised to her. Their Dad put his hand on her shoulder, as if comforting her, before excusing himself to have their moment alone.

“W-we w-were looking at you earlier because,” stammered Sofia, feeling immensely embarrassed at Athena. “You look like our departed mother. She’s been gone for nine years now.”

Athena gasped, covering her face in shock. She was overcome with emotion, feeling sorry about Sofia, her sister and brothers losing their mother, and Julian losing his wife. Athena comforted the teenager and hushed her softly.

“I’m pretty sure your father is doing his very best to support you and siblings alone,” she said, hugging Sofia. “You must be very lucky to have such a father who raises all of you.”

Sofia nodded, wiping tears off her face. She realised how their father worked hard to support them through school without sacrificing his work time. And then she looked up at Athena and mused, “Are you alone now? Am I bothering you?”

Athena shook her head.

“Will you please come with me? I’d like to introduce you to my siblings.”

While Sofia and Athena were talking, Julian excused himself and went back to the family table. As he was about to sit, Sofia emerged, holding Athena by the hand and announced that she will be joining them. Her family reacted differently: their father and her older twin brothers Philipp Lukas and Thomas Manuel were surprised, her eldest brother Bastian Felix was calm, and the youngest Pia Charlotte — Sofia’s twin sister — was puzzled.

“Sofia? What –?” she said, her voice trailing off in the air.

Bastian’s face then changed from calm to shocked. He realised the point of it all. “Sofia, is that –?”

The newcomer greeted a cheerful “Hi!” to the children. Stupefied, the children gawked at her as they waved back.

Athena sat down between Thomas Manuel and Sofia Kerstin, surveying the shocked faces of the brood. “Nice to meet you,” she chirped, still smiling widely.

“Hi! I’m Pia Charlotte, Sofia’s twin and the youngest of the family,” Pia piped up, proudly then cautiously, as she gave her other siblings a look. “I just have to say this: you look exactly like our mother who passed away nine years ago.”

Her brothers and sisters groaned but Julian was unsurprised by her comment. Meanwhile Athena looked largely unaffected by it — but her face glowed in wonder.

“Well, Sofia told me so. Well I –”

“This is astonishing!” reacted Thomas Manuel while the others nodded in agreement and Julian blushed.

“You okay there, Dad?” asked Bastian Felix with a look of concern on his face.

“Yep!” replied Julian as if nothing happened. “I am. Just amused at you lot.”

“So Athena, what are your hobbies?” Pia asked at length, cutting the obvious awkwardness in the night air.

Athena looked up to think for a moment. “Hmm. My hobbies include swimming, cooking, and stargazing.”

Stargazing.

Julian suddenly felt cold, like a cold wind brushed his arms. It caused him to feel like memories were coming back. Athena shifted her gaze from Pia to him and it was causing him all sorts of emotion and transporting him to another place.

Faintly, he heard one of his children excitedly telling Athena, “Our mother loved stargazing, too! Our father taught her how ’cause Dad works at SpaceY!”

That brought him back to earth. Julian shook his head as his children looked at him weirdly.

“Oh? That’s phenomenal. I love stargazing. It helps me relax a little.” a voice, apparently Athena’s — or Jamie’s — said.

“Dad can teach you about stars, constellations, and planets!” gushed Thomas. “That’s his specialty, besides programming.”

Philipp then exclaimed, “Dad, maybe you can stargaze with Athena? We’ll be fine right here!” To which Bastian and the rest of the siblings cheering their father on. Julian was blushing mad while trying to regain his composure. He didn’t want to show his kids that he was close to being embarrassed. Sure, Athena was beautiful, but he didn’t want to get his hopes up.

“Of course,” replied Julian, standing up. Both Bastian and Pia were watching him leave the table.

“Dad looks like he’s in a trance or something,” whispered Pia to nobody. Her sister and brothers seem to agree, though.

Later that night Julian and Athena found themselves a spot on the shore, not far from the restaurant. They laid themselves down on the sand and Athena started to point to the direction of Orion.

“That’s my favourite because it looks like a hunter,” Athena proudly said, chuckling. “How about you? What’s your favourite?”

“Mine’s Andromeda,” replied Julian, looking at the night sky and the dark sea. “Orion’s also my late wife Jamie’s favourite constellation.”

Athena chuckled. “My gosh…really?”

“Yeah. I know the coincedences are weird, but it’s true.”

“Tell me why Andromeda is your favourite,” said Athena, interest obvious in her tone.

“Because Andromeda is a beautiful woman, and she reminds me of my wife.”

Upon answering Athena, Julian had a flashback of him and his wife stargazing in the same spot many years ago.
